Ryad Mezzour: AFCON 2025 Sends a Strong Signal of Morocco’s Reliability to the World

The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 was not only a celebration of football passion across the continent. In just a few weeks, the tournament placed Morocco’s public action, institutional capacity and long-term vision under intense global scrutiny. Speaking on the television program “L’Info en Face” on January 26, Morocco’s Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour, offered a strategic reading of the event that went far beyond sporting results.

Rather than commenting on scores or trophies, Mezzour framed AFCON 2025 as a defining moment for Morocco’s international credibility — a large-scale demonstration of the country’s ability to deliver complex commitments, manage pressure, and project confidence on the world stage.

AFCON 2025: More Than a Football Tournament

According to the minister, reducing AFCON 2025 to a sporting competition would miss its deeper significance. The scale and intensity of the event shifted the public debate from football performance to collective capacity, state organization, and long-term coherence in public decision-making.

As global attention intensified, Morocco faced a dual test: performing under operational constraints while maintaining consistency in strategic choices. AFCON 2025, Mezzour argued, revealed a state capable of executing complex projects within tight deadlines, without compromising long-term development priorities.

When Sport Becomes Political

From the outset, AFCON 2025 exceeded its athletic framework and opened broader discussions about Africa’s place in the global order, its resources, and its development potential. The tournament increased Morocco’s visibility and exposure, reinforcing the idea of an Africa capable of shaping its own narrative.

For Ryad Mezzour, sport is never merely entertainment. Throughout history, sporting competitions have acted as symbolic substitutes for conflict, channeling rivalry into regulated frameworks. AFCON 2025 illustrated this political dimension, provided that emotions remained contained within the boundaries of fair competition.

The minister also highlighted the national team’s achievement, reaching the final after more than two decades, driven by a young generation aged between 24 and 26. Recalling Morocco’s recent milestones — a World Cup semi-final and an AFCON final — Mezzour concluded that head coach Walid Regragui “did the job,” emphasizing that technical decisions must remain shielded from emotional reactions.

Credibility Tested on the Global Stage

Beyond sporting results, Morocco demonstrated its operational readiness through functional infrastructure, effective security systems and smooth organization. According to Mezzour, this performance sent a powerful signal to investors, financial institutions and industrial partners by reducing perceived risk.

Investments dedicated solely to stadium upgrades were estimated between 12 and 14 billion dirhams, compared to an annual public investment volume of nearly 400 billion dirhams. These efforts were complemented by accelerated projects in transport, healthcare and public services — initiatives long planned but fast-tracked to meet AFCON requirements.

The tournament also generated an invaluable intangible impact. Approximately 2.2 billion television viewers and nearly 10 billion social media views provided global exposure that traditional communication campaigns could not replicate without budgets ranging from 450 to 500 million dollars.

Economic Acceleration and Value Creation

Addressing concerns over costs, Ryad Mezzour clarified that AFCON 2025 did not divert public investment from national priorities but rather accelerated their execution. Long-scheduled projects were completed at a faster pace, generating a measurable economic multiplier effect.

Based on cross-sector indicators — including construction activity, cement consumption, tourism flows, air transport, commerce and advertising — the additional wealth created is currently estimated between 20 and 25 billion dirhams.

This acceleration translated into the creation of 52,000 to 60,000 temporary jobs in the construction sector during the preparation phase, alongside a significant increase in tourist arrivals and aviation revenues. Spillover effects extended across the service economy, from cafés and fan zones to event management and advertising.

Social Media Excesses and Institutional Response

Following the final match between Morocco and Senegal, regrettable incidents and online excesses emerged on social media platforms. Mezzour stressed that these amplified voices do not reflect the depth or values of Moroccan society.

However, the minister was unequivocal in condemning racist remarks, describing them as “unacceptable” and “intolerable.” He reaffirmed Morocco’s constitutional foundations — rooted in diversity, pluralism and African identity — and emphasized that the response came at the highest level of the state, promoting calm, responsibility and national unity.

Ultimately, AFCON 2025 was not a fleeting moment but a catalyst. It showcased Morocco’s ability to combine ambition, execution and restraint — sending a clear message of reliability to the world ahead of even greater challenges, including the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
