Tangier becomes the first Moroccan city to deploy smart digital traffic signage as part of its preparations for the 2030 World Cup.

As part of its preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, Tangier is accelerating its transition toward smarter urban management. The northern Moroccan metropolis has launched, for the first time nationwide, a network of intelligent digital traffic signs designed to inform drivers in real time, optimize traffic flows, and improve road mobility.

Tangier steps up urban modernization for World Cup 2030

Tangier continues to roll out major infrastructure projects in anticipation of hosting World Cup 2030 matches. These initiatives span several neighborhoods, public spaces, and strategic road axes, as the city prepares to welcome millions of visitors in the coming years.

Within this framework, the first phase of an unprecedented project at the national level has just been completed. It involves the installation of smart digital display panels across key streets, squares, and entry points to the city, particularly along the main corridors connecting Tangier to Rabat in the west and Tetouan in the east.

Smart digital panels deployed at strategic entry points

Supervised by the public mobility company Tanja Mobilité, the project has seen the deployment of around nine intelligent digital screens. These panels provide motorists with real-time traffic information, as well as welcome messages displayed in Arabic, French, and English.

Featuring Morocco’s national flag, the screens have been installed near Tangier Ibn Battouta International Airport and along major access roads linking the city to Rabat and Tetouan. Operating continuously, day and night, they aim to guide drivers, improve traffic fluidity, and reduce congestion.

Real-time data to improve mobility and safety

Beyond traffic updates, the smart panels also display real-time weather information for Tangier, along with public awareness messages and practical information for both residents and visitors, delivered in multiple languages.

Speaking to the media, Camilia Gharnati, an engineer at Tanja Mobilité, explained that these panels are Variable Message Signs (VMS) based on intelligent traffic management and information dissemination systems, fully aligned with the dynamics of urban mobility.

A tool for anticipation during peak hours and major events

The screens provide live updates on traffic conditions, roadworks, maintenance operations, and road safety awareness messages. This data allows road users to anticipate disruptions, plan their journeys more effectively, and adjust their routes when necessary.

According to Gharnati, the usefulness of these smart panels becomes particularly evident during rush hours and major events hosted by the city, especially football matches, where they play a crucial role in easing traffic flow and limiting road congestion.

Smart mobility at the heart of Tangier’s World Cup vision

With this project, Tangier positions itself as a pioneer of smart urban mobility in Morocco. The initiative reflects a broader vision to meet international standards in transport management and urban services, in line with the city’s ambition to deliver a seamless experience during the 2030 World Cup.

By combining digital innovation with infrastructure development, Tangier is laying the foundations for a more efficient, connected, and visitor-friendly city, ready to host one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
