Rabat’s Smart Camera Network: How 4,000 Devices Will Redefine Urban Security

Rabat is installing 4,000 smart cameras across the capital, creating one of Morocco’s most advanced urban security systems. Combining AI, real-time monitoring and data oversight, the project marks a major step toward a connected Moroccan smart-city mode

A Capital Preparing for a New Era of Smart Surveillance

Rabat is entering a new phase of urban modernization with the installation of 4,000 smart surveillance cameras across the capital. The project, valued at around 100 million dirhams, reflects Morocco’s growing ambition to merge technology, mobility and public safety into a single urban ecosystem.
These cameras are not ordinary devices. They include AI-assisted video analytics, license-plate recognition systems, facial-recognition capabilities, and PTZ cameras capable of tracking movement in high-traffic zones. The vision is clear: create a city where traffic flows better, incidents are detected faster, and public spaces benefit from real-time monitoring.

The rollout is led by Rabat Région Aménagements, with major Moroccan companies managing command-center infrastructure and large-scale camera deployment. The system is expected to be fully operational by late 2025, supporting the capital during a period of growing international visibility and major events.

Innovation, Oversight and the Future of Urban Living in Morocco

The rise of AI-driven surveillance also raises important questions. Morocco’s data-protection authority, CNDP, is reviewing the project to ensure that the use of advanced monitoring tools aligns with national privacy laws. This dialogue marks a crucial balance between technological progress and citizen rights.

For Rabat, the camera network is more than a security upgrade. It represents a shift toward smart-city infrastructure, where technology becomes part of daily life, managing traffic, improving emergency response and shaping a safer, more connected urban environment.
