Brahim Diaz could hardly have dreamed of a better start to his Africa Cup of Nations campaign. Making his first major continental appearance, the Moroccan attacking midfielder left a strong impression by opening the scoring in Morocco’s controlled 2–0 victory over Comoros on Sunday in Rabat, marking the Lions of the Atlas’ debut at the TotalEnergies AFCON 2025.
Driven by an electric home crowd, Diaz was at the heart of Morocco’s attacking play. Constantly moving between the lines, always available for the ball, he quickly tipped the balance of the match. His opening goal relieved early pressure, settled Moroccan nerves and ignited a wave of celebration throughout the Rabat Sports Complex.
Named TotalEnergies Man of the Match, the Real Madrid player expressed the deep sense of belonging he feels when wearing the Moroccan jersey.
“I feel at home. I truly feel good, and I know the people love me,” Diaz said. “I always want to give my maximum for Morocco, because without them, I wouldn’t be here. I’m very happy to represent my country.”
Those words were fully reflected in his performance. Tireless in his movement, constantly asking for the ball and relentlessly challenging the Comorian defense, Diaz embodied the ambition and composure of a Moroccan team confident in its strength.
This opening victory places the Lions of the Atlas in an ideal position in what promises to be a competitive Group A. The host nation’s next challenge will be a highly anticipated clash against Mali on December 26. Comoros, meanwhile, will look to bounce back when they face Zambia, the 2012 African champions, on December 29
