Morocco is taking a decisive leap forward in its journey toward modern and sustainable urban mobility. As part of the 2025–2029 National Transport Modernization Program, nearly 1,000 brand-new buses will hit the streets by late October and early November 2025, a move that redefines how citizens commute across Moroccan cities.

Announced by Younes El Kasmi, Governor and Director of Urban Mobility and Transport at the Ministry of the Interior’s General Directorate of Territorial Collectivities, this initiative reflects Morocco’s determination to build an inclusive, efficient, and eco-friendly public transport network.

1,000 New Buses Across 29 Moroccan Cities

The first phase of this ambitious project, part of a total fleet of 1,487 vehicles, will benefit Morocco’s largest urban centers: Tangier, Tetouan, Fès, Rabat, Benslimane, Marrakech, and Agadir. Neighboring towns such as Fnideq, Assilah, Tamansourt, Benguerir, and Inzegane Ait-Melloul will also join the initiative.

In total, 29 cities and metropolitan areas will be equipped with modern buses featuring electronic ticketing and smart operation and passenger information systems (SAEIV). A dedicated maintenance and operations center will ensure long-term reliability and optimal service.

These vehicles will be managed by professional transport operators under a new delegated management model emphasizing quality, innovation, and performance. This marks a turning point for Moroccan public transport governance.

Extending Smart Mobility Nationwide

Subsequent phases will expand the program to other major cities, including Casablanca, Meknes, Laayoune, Béni Mellal, Dakhla, and Oujda, bringing the total investment to nearly 11 billion dirhams for 3,800 new buses and integrated smart transport systems.

This transformation positions Morocco as a regional leader in green mobility and digital infrastructure. Each new bus represents not only improved comfort for passengers but also reduced carbon emissions and stronger regional connectivity.

A Royal Vision for Inclusive and Sustainable Mobility

According to Younes El Kasmi, the program lays the groundwork for a new governance model in line with the Royal Vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, who emphasized sustainable transport during the Second National Conference on Advanced Regionalization in December 2024.

“Developing an inclusive and sustainable transport system is key to reducing regional disparities and ensuring integrated national development,” declared His Majesty King Mohammed VI.

This vision highlights the importance of connecting citizens and territories through modern infrastructure, ensuring that every Moroccan, from major cities to southern provinces, benefits from reliable and affordable transport.

Impact on AFCON 2025 and Beyond

The arrival of these new buses coincides with Morocco’s final preparations for hosting AFCON 2025, where efficient mobility is crucial to welcome fans and visitors from across Africa. Enhanced public transport systems in cities like Casablanca, Fez, Marrakech, Agadir, Rabat, and Tangier will ensure smooth connections to stadiums, airports, and tourist sites.

Beyond sports events, this long-term plan strengthens Morocco’s position as a continental hub of innovation, sustainability, and hospitality, a vision perfectly aligned with the country’s 2030 development goals.
