Morocco were held to a 1–1 draw by Mali on Friday in a crucial Group A encounter at the Africa Cup of Nations 2025, a result that delays the Atlas Lions’ qualification for the knockout stages.

The tournament hosts took the lead late in the first half through Brahim Diaz, who calmly converted a penalty after sustained Moroccan pressure. However, Mali responded after the break with an equalizer of their own, also from the spot, converted by Lassine Sinayoko, leaving Morocco frustrated at the final whistle.

From the opening minutes at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Complex in Rabat, Morocco imposed their possession-based style, circulating the ball patiently and stretching the pitch in search of openings. Mali, meanwhile, adopted a compact and physically demanding defensive block, closing spaces and engaging in intense duels to disrupt Morocco’s rhythm.

Despite creating several clear chances, the Atlas Lions lacked precision in the final touch. Missed opportunities from Saibari and El Kaabi prevented Walid Regragui’s side from extending their advantage before the break. Brahim Diaz eventually broke the deadlock after earning a penalty with a sharp run down the right flank, confidently sending Morocco into halftime with a deserved lead.

The second half marked a turning point in the contest. Mali returned with renewed determination, pressing higher and increasing their attacking intensity. Their persistence paid off when a handball inside the Moroccan penalty area, following a corner scramble, resulted in a penalty.

Lassine Sinayoko remained composed under heavy pressure from the home crowd and converted the spot kick with precision, restoring parity and dramatically shifting the momentum of the match.

The final twenty minutes developed into a tense battle, with Morocco pushing relentlessly for a winning goal while remaining vulnerable to Malian counter-attacks. Despite sustained pressure, the Atlas Lions were unable to break through a resilient Malian defense that held firm until the final whistle.

The draw reflects the balance of the contest and keeps Group A wide open. Morocco now face a must-win situation against Zambia in their final group match, as victory will be essential to secure qualification for the AFCON 2025 round of sixteen.
