Mohamed Ouahbi is the new head coach of Morocco’s national team. The announcement was made on March 5, 2026 at the Mohammed VI Football Complex, where he officially succeeded Walid Regragui.
A new chapter for the Atlas Lions
The Moroccan football federation confirmed the appointment during an official ceremony at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Maâmora.
Mohamed Ouahbi takes over from Walid Regragui, who led Morocco through one of the most successful periods in its football history. Under his leadership, the Atlas Lions reached the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup and finished as runners-up at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The transition marks a new phase for the national team while maintaining the foundations built over the past few years.
A continuity strategy from the FRMF
According to Royal Moroccan Football Federation president Fouzi Lekjaa, the choice of Mohamed Ouahbi reflects a strategy of continuity.
The Moroccan coach gained strong recognition after guiding Morocco’s U20 national team to a historic world title in October 2025, strengthening his position within the national development project.
His experience with youth teams and the Olympic squad aligns with the federation’s long-term vision to build a competitive and sustainable national team.
Ouahbi outlines ambition and gratitude
During his first speech as national team coach, Mohamed Ouahbi expressed gratitude to King Mohammed VI for his support of Moroccan football.
He also thanked the federation and its president for the trust placed in him.
The new coach emphasized his commitment to working with humility, dedication and patriotism in order to continue the progress achieved by the national team.
Ouahbi also paid tribute to his predecessor Walid Regragui, thanking him for the legacy he leaves behind and for the support he provided to Morocco’s youth teams.
Experienced staff joining the project
Ouahbi confirmed that João Sacramento will serve as his first assistant coach.
Sacramento previously worked alongside José Mourinho and Christophe Galtier in major European clubs including AS Roma, Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain.
The rest of the coaching staff will be finalized in the coming days as preparations begin for Morocco’s next international fixtures.
