The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has voiced its total and unconditional support for Moroccan international Omar El Hilali. The Espanyol Barcelona defender was the victim of racist abuse during a La Liga match against Elche on Sunday, March 1, 2026.
FRMF expresses total support for Omar El Hilali
In an official statement, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation reaffirmed its unconditional backing of Omar El Hilali after the player reported racist and abusive comments.
The 22-year-old defender, who represents Morocco internationally and plays for Espanyol Barcelona, raised the issue directly with the referee during the match.
The incident occurred during a tense exchange with Spanish striker Rafa Mir. According to El Hilali, the comments were discriminatory in nature.
Anti-racism protocol activated in Liga match
Following the complaint, the referee immediately activated the official anti-racism protocol. He crossed his arms, the gesture introduced to signal racism-related incidents in professional football.
The referee then approached both benches, leading to a temporary suspension of the match for around three minutes.
The game eventually resumed and ended in a 2-2 draw between Espanyol and Elche in the 26th round of La Liga.
Morocco reaffirms its commitment to respect and fair play
In its communication, the FRMF firmly rejected all forms of racism and discrimination, whether inside stadiums or beyond.
The Federation reiterated its commitment to the values of respect, tolerance and fair play that must guide football at every level.
This firm stance reflects Morocco’s broader vision for football governance, especially as the country prepares for major international competitions in the coming years.
