AFCON 2025: Head-to-head history gives Cameroon a clear edge over Morocco

As Morocco prepare to face Cameroon at AFCON 2025, historical statistics strongly favor the Indomitable Lions.
Across more than four decades of encounters, Cameroon have largely dominated this classic African football rivalry.

The Moroccan national team has faced Cameroon on 12 occasions in official and friendly matches.
Cameroon have recorded six victories, while Morocco have managed just one win, with the remaining five matches ending in draws.

A rivalry dating back to 1981

The first meeting between the two sides took place on November 15, 1981, during the 1982 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Cameroon claimed a 2–0 victory in Kenitra before repeating their success in the return leg two weeks later with a 2–1 win.

Their third encounter came at the 1986 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, ending in a 1–1 draw.
Two years later, the teams met again at AFCON 1988 in Morocco, where Cameroon edged the hosts 1–0 at Casablanca’s Mohammed V Stadium.

Cameroon dominance through AFCON and World Cup qualifiers

Cameroon continued to assert their dominance in subsequent AFCON tournaments, defeating Morocco 1–0 in Senegal during the 1992 edition.
Several friendly matches followed, most of them ending in draws, including fixtures in 1994, 2005, and 2011.

In World Cup qualifying campaigns, Cameroon again proved superior. The Indomitable Lions secured a 2–0 victory in Fes in November 2009
during the 2010 World Cup qualifiers and later defeated Morocco 1–0 in June 2017 during the AFCON 2019 qualifying phase.

Morocco’s historic first victory

Morocco finally broke the curse on November 16, 2018, recording their first-ever win against Cameroon.
Playing at Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca, the Atlas Lions won 2–0 in an AFCON 2019 qualifier,
ending a long run of frustration against one of Africa’s most formidable teams.
