The Africa Cup of Nations 2025 continues to deliver landmark moments, and Sadio Mané has once again placed his name firmly in the tournament’s history. The Senegalese forward achieved a new AFCON record during Senegal’s 3–1 victory over Sudan, a result that secured qualification for the quarterfinals.
The round-of-16 clash was played on Saturday evening at the Ibn Battouta Stadium in Tangier, as part of the knockout phase of the continental tournament currently being hosted by Morocco until January 18. Senegal, known as the Lions of Teranga, controlled key phases of the match and showed their experience at decisive moments.
A Historic Night for Mané
Mané was at the heart of Senegal’s performance, not by scoring, but by shaping the outcome through creativity and vision. He delivered two assists, directly contributing to two of Senegal’s three goals. With that display, Mané raised his total number of assists in AFCON history to nine, setting a new all-time record.
This achievement allows him to move clear of Yaya Touré, whose previous record stood at seven assists. The milestone highlights Mané’s evolution from a pure goal threat into a complete attacking leader capable of influencing games in multiple ways.
Senegal’s Quarterfinal Ambitions
Beyond the individual record, the result confirms Senegal’s status as one of the strongest contenders in the tournament. Their balance between defensive solidity and attacking efficiency once again proved decisive against a Sudanese side that fought bravely but struggled to contain Senegal’s intensity.
Senegal will now face the winner of the highly anticipated clash between Tunisia national football team and Mali national football team in the quarterfinals, a matchup that promises another demanding test.
