Although intended humorously, the remark was poorly received by some online users, triggering a wave of hostile and racially abusive comments toward the Ivorian forward.
Pépé apologized publicly for the misunderstanding and called for respect, but the climate around him had already deteriorated. According to several observers, Faé may have sought to prevent additional tension by not exposing the player to a hostile environment during a major tournament hosted in Morocco.
Pépé himself hinted that the controversy influenced his exclusion, writing on Instagram:
“Double punishment for me… Thanks to Villarreal, La Liga, and everyone who supported me after these days of harassment and racism. Good luck to my teammates.”
His sister also expressed frustration online, defending her brother’s character and criticizing what she perceived as an unfair consequence following online harassment.
