Morocco’s U20 national team sealed their place in the FIFA U-20 World Cup quarter-finals after a dramatic 2-1 victory over South Korea at Estadio El Teniente in Rancagua. The win came in the Round of 16 and sends the Atlas Cubs through to face the United States in the la
.

Early breakthrough and nerves

The match swung in Morocco’s favor very early. In the eighth minute an unfortunate own goal by South Korea defender Shin Min-ha put Morocco ahead and disrupted the plans of Korean coach Lee Chang-won, who had hoped his side would take the initiative. The early set-back forced the visitors to chase the game and test Moroccan goalkeeper Yanis Benchawash with a number of attempts.

Second-half header settles it

After a tightly contested first half, the two teams traded chances in the second. Morocco doubled their lead in the 58th minute when defender Mohamed Yasser Zabiri rose to meet a cross and power a header into the net, giving the Atlas Cubs a more comfortable cushion. South Korea pushed forward in search of a response, but kept missing in the final touch despite creating opportunities.

Late drama, penalty reduces the deficit

As the match drew toward its close and Morocco protected their lead with disciplined defending and occasional breaks on the counter, South Korea were awarded a late penalty which they converted to make it 2-1. The goal came too late to change the outcome: Morocco held on and celebrated qualification to the quarter-finals.

What’s next? Morocco will meet the United States — already qualified after their victory over Italy, in the U20 World Cup quarter-finals. The Atlas Cubs now have a chance to reach the competition’s semi-finals for the third time in their history.
