Morocco secured their place in the AFCON 2025 quarterfinals after a narrow 1-0 victory over Tanzania in Rabat. It was a demanding contest, but one that confirms both qualification and Morocco’s rise into the world’s Top 10 rankings.
A controlled start, but a stubborn Tanzanian block
After finishing top of Group A with a highly controlled group-stage campaign, the Atlas Lions faced a disciplined Tanzania side in the round of 16 on Sunday, January 4, at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex.
The match, played to a sold-out crowd, marked the return of captain Achraf Hakimi to the starting lineup for the first time in the tournament. However, the absence of injured midfielder Azzedine Ounahi was clearly felt, as Morocco struggled to find rhythm against a low defensive block.
Despite enjoying more than 70% possession in the first half, Walid Regragui’s men found it difficult to break through a well-organized Tanzanian defense, while remaining alert to occasional counterattacks.
Pressure builds after the break
Morocco raised the tempo after halftime, pushed forward by the energy of the home crowd. Chances followed in quick succession through Abde Ezzalzouli, Bilal El Khannouss, and Ayoub El Kaabi.
Hakimi came close from a direct free kick on the hour mark, forcing goalkeeper Foba into a decisive touch before the ball crashed against the crossbar. At the other end, Tanzania threatened through Feisal Salum, but Yassine Bounou reacted brilliantly to keep Morocco level.
Brahim Diaz delivers the breakthrough
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 64th minute. Brahim Diaz, well set up by Hakimi, struck decisively at the near post to give Morocco a deserved lead and ignite the atmosphere inside the stadium.
Regragui quickly refreshed his side, introducing Youssef En-Nesyri, Eliesse Ben Seghir, and Anass Salah-Eddine. Morocco maintained control of the match, keeping Tanzania pinned deep in their own half.
Late on, young midfielder Oussama Targhalline was given valuable minutes as Morocco managed the final stages with maturity and discipline.
A narrow win with major significance
The final whistle confirmed a 1-0 victory. It was not an easy night for the Atlas Lions, but the result was decisive. Morocco move into the AFCON 2025 quarterfinals and, beyond qualification, the win cements their place among the world’s Top 10 national teams.
