Morocco’s approach to sports development stands in sharp contrast to that of many African countries, particularly in terms of long-term planning and investment, according to a senior official from Uganda’s sports authorities. The official stressed that the gap in ambition between Uganda and Morocco is significant, largely due to the Kingdom’s strategic use of sport as a tool for national development.
In media remarks, the official highlighted that Morocco has implemented an investment strategy spanning three decades, with clear objectives that go far beyond short-term sporting events. One of the central goals of this vision, he noted, has been positioning the country to host major global competitions, including the FIFA World Cup.
Sport as a Driver of Development
The Moroccan government’s investment in sports infrastructure was estimated at around $16 billion, spread over a long period. This sustained effort, according to the official, reflects a broader philosophy in which football and sport are leveraged to boost tourism, stimulate economic growth, and address wider development challenges.
In comparison, Uganda’s primary focus has been on hosting the Africa Cup of Nations 2027, a goal that, while ambitious, does not match the scale or time horizon of Morocco’s strategy.
Different Paths, Shared Objectives
Despite acknowledging the disparity in ambitions, the Ugandan official emphasized that his country has still allocated the necessary funding for its sports projects. All initiatives, he said, have been carefully assessed and approved, with development programs designed to improve sports infrastructure and facilities.
The comments underline Morocco’s growing reputation as a model for long-term sports planning in Africa, demonstrating how sustained investment and a clear vision can turn sport into a powerful catalyst for national development.
