Germany Urges FIFA to Strengthen Fan Safety Measures
As concerns grow over security in Mexico, FIFA has been urged by a senior German official to ensure robust safety measures for fans attending the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Mexico is set to co-host with the United States and Canada next June.
Christoph Bloß, tourism coordinator for the German federal government, told Handelsblatt that FIFA should work closely with the governments of Mexico, Canada, and the U.S. to guarantee that supporters face no danger while traveling to or attending matches. He stressed that commitment to international safety standards by host countries should be a fundamental requirement for the success of the tournament.
Rising Concerns After Violence in Mexico
Bloß’s comments come amid a recent surge in violence in Mexico linked to the death of Nemesio Oseguera, “El Mencho,” leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. A military operation to detain him triggered violent clashes in several regions, raising red flags about security conditions in the months leading up to the World Cup.
Mexico is scheduled to host 13 matches across Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey, and authorities—including President Claudia Sheinbaum—have reiterated that “all guarantees” are in place to protect fans and teams. FIFA officials have also maintained close contact with Mexican authorities to monitor the situation and safeguard preparations.
Bloß emphasized that the safety of German tourists is a “top priority,” and Berlin will continue to track developments closely, offering updated travel guidance as the tournament approaches.
