Historic Forum in Rabat Brings Players’ Voices to the Fore
Rabat marked a historic turning point in global football governance by hosting the first FIFA Professional Players Consultation Forum. Held alongside the U-17 Women’s World Cup final, the meeting brought together representatives from 30 players’ unions across five continents and was chaired by FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Secretary General Mattias Grafström. Legendary figures such as George Weah and several world champions were also present, underlining the importance of this dialogue for all football stakeholders.
Player Welfare at the Center of Discussions
The forum placed player wellbeing at the heart of its talks. Delegates adopted several key recommendations: a minimum of 72 hours of rest between two official matches, 21 consecutive days of rest between seasons, a mandatory weekly day off, and recognition of long-haul travel and extreme climatic conditions in scheduling decisions. These measures aim to create a sustainable balance between performance, health and players’ personal lives, a central issue in modern football.
Concrete Financial Support: A $20M FIFA Fund
Alongside regulatory recommendations, FIFA announced the creation of the FIFA Fund for Professional Players, endowed with $20 million for the 2026–2029 period. The fund will support players facing unpaid wages due to their clubs’ financial difficulties. FIFA also confirmed the integration of union representatives into several decision-making committees to ensure that players’ interests are systematically considered in sporting and regulatory policies.
Stronger Union Support and Legal Mechanisms
A support mechanism for players’ unions was announced to develop local activities, strengthen youth player training and support women’s football, creating a durable framework for the protection and professionalization of footballers. Additionally, a FIFA–unions working group will handle sensitive legal matters such as transfers, contracts and disputes, ensuring structured and permanent dialogue between players and decision-makers.
Freedom from Racism and a New Panel of Player Voices
During the two-day session, members exchanged best practices with federations such as England and Germany and with representatives like Piara Powar from the Fare network. George Weah emphasized unity and diversity in football, calling racism “a disease” and insisting the pitch remain a space of respect and solidarity. The Player Voice Panel (PVP), part of FIFA’s global stance against racism adopted in 2024, will advise on anti-racism strategies, educate young players and take part in worldwide educational initiatives.

The choice of Rabat for this inaugural forum is symbolic. By hosting this unprecedented meeting, Morocco positions itself as a key actor in reforming and modernizing world football, aiming to become a strategic hub for future FIFA consultations and an anchor point for the professional game’s evolution.
