CAF President Patrice Motsepe has announced a major increase in the prize money for the Africa Cup of Nations, with the winner of AFCON 2025 in Morocco set to receive $10 million.
Historic increase in AFCON prize money
Speaking during the official press conference ahead of the tournament, Motsepe explained that the prize fund has followed a steady upward trend. It initially stood below $5 million, before being raised to $8 million, and now reaches $10 million for the first time in the competition’s history.
The CAF president described the move as part of a broader strategy to strengthen the tournament’s competitiveness and enhance the overall value of African football.
New competition format and future plans
Motsepe also confirmed key structural changes to the Africa Cup of Nations calendar. CAF will move toward organizing the tournament every four years, starting after the 2028 edition, with upcoming tournaments scheduled for 2027 and 2028.
In addition, CAF plans to launch an African Nations League in partnership with FIFA. The new competition is expected to begin in 2029 and will be divided into four regional zones, alongside increased financial support of $1 million for African national federations.
