Morocco is about to introduce a groundbreaking national legal framework aimed at reducing digital addiction among children and teenagers. According to Akhbarona.com, Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid confirmed that a comprehensive law regulating the electronic gaming market will soon be unveiled. The initiative responds to growing concerns over the negative effects of highly popular games such as “Roblox” and “Free Fire”, including digital violence, social withdrawal and behavioral disturbances.
A balanced approach: protection without total ban
The government stresses that the upcoming legislation will not impose a blanket ban. Instead, it seeks to establish a system that balances child protection with the encouragement of national technological creativity. The new law will introduce a mandatory age-rating system aligned with international standards, and will include strict oversight of violent content and in-game purchases, particularly loot boxes and reward systems that often drain family budgets without adequate supervision.
National licensing, parental control tools and data protection
Under the project, games will be subject to pre-distribution licensing and monitoring in Morocco. Clear technical regulations will govern gameplay duration, while families will gain access to effective parental control mechanisms. The legislation will also regulate all digital operations linked to gaming, ensuring full transparency, children’s data protection, and the right to refunds in cases of exploitation or misleading practices.
A holistic vision beyond technology
The reform goes further than technical regulation. It embraces a nationwide awareness strategy in partnership with the Ministry of Education, including school-based campaigns and programs addressing the psychological impact of digital addiction under the supervision of the Ministry of Health. Moroccan game developers will also be encouraged to follow ethical design guidelines protecting minors, while civil society and media outlets will be mobilized to promote safe and responsible digital culture.
Supporting a national gaming industry
Beyond child safety, the government aims to transform the upcoming legislation into a lever for the development of Morocco’s gaming industry. By regulating the market and ensuring a safe digital environment, the law is expected to boost national competitiveness, attract investment and stimulate innovative local content creation. This initiative marks a decisive step toward establishing a secure, constructive digital ecosystem, one that supports knowledge, creativity and national talent while shielding younger generations from the risks of the virtual world.
