The city of Tangier is preparing to raise one of the largest national flags ever installed in Morocco, positioned along the iconic Corniche promenade. According to akhbarona.com, the flag will cover up to 50 square metres and will be mounted at a height allowing it to be visible from the Spanish coastline—particularly from Tarifa, just 14 kilometres from the nearest point of the Strait of Gibraltar.
The flag will be installed atop a 30-metre metal mast, the equivalent of a nine-storey building, equipped with powerful nighttime lighting that will illuminate the entire Bay of Tangier. The project is expected to become a new symbolic landmark, reinforcing Morocco’s presence across both sides of the Strait.
The Tangier City Council has allocated a budget of 1.3 million MAD for the initiative, covering engineering works and mounting equipment. The mast will be built with corrosion-resistant specifications, designed to withstand sea humidity and coastal weather conditions.
The structure will rest on a reinforced concrete base engineered to resist the strong winds characteristic of the Strait of Gibraltar, which can exceed 60 km/h during certain periods.
The project, already attracting considerable interest from Tangier residents, is expected to become a new point of tourist appeal—while serving as a powerful visual symbol of Morocco overlooking one of the world’s most strategic maritime corridors.
