From Youth Coach to Historic Achievement with Morocco U20
Mohamed Ouahbi has recently emerged as one of the most prominent figures in Moroccan football after leading the national under 20 team to a historic international title. Under his guidance, the Atlas Cubs won the FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile with a 2–0 victory over Argentina in the final. This result marked a major milestone for Moroccan football because it made Morocco the first Arab nation and only the second African team to win the global youth tournament.
The achievement did not occur by chance. Ouahbi structured the team around tactical discipline, controlled transitions, and efficient attacking patterns. Throughout the competition, Morocco defeated several strong opponents including Spain, Brazil, South Korea, and France before reaching the final. As a result, the victory strengthened Ouahbi’s reputation as a coach capable of managing high level international competition.
An Unconventional Path Into Professional Coaching
Unlike many football managers who build their careers as professional players, Mohamed Ouahbi followed a different path into coaching. He did not play professional football and initially worked as a teacher in Belgium. Over time, his interest in football development encouraged him to transition into coaching.
Once he committed to this direction, he joined the youth academy of Anderlecht, one of Belgium’s most respected football institutions. This step marked the beginning of a long developmental phase that would shape his coaching philosophy.
Seventeen Years of Development at Anderlecht
At Anderlecht, Ouahbi spent more than 17 years working across the club’s youth structure. During this period he coached multiple age groups, beginning with players under nine years old and eventually progressing to the under 21 team. This long term involvement allowed him to understand each stage of player development and refine his approach to youth training.
His work also contributed to the growth of several players who later achieved international recognition. Among them were Youri Tielemans, Adnan Januzaj, and Charly Musonda. These experiences helped Ouahbi develop a coaching model centered on tactical intelligence, structured development, and consistent performance standards.
The impact of this work became particularly visible in 2015 when Anderlecht’s youth team reached the semi final of the UEFA Youth League. During that campaign the team eliminated major European academies including Barcelona and Porto. This run demonstrated Ouahbi’s ability to organize competitive youth teams capable of performing against elite opposition.
Return to Morocco and the National Team Project
After his long experience in Belgium, Ouahbi briefly worked in Saudi Arabia as an assistant coach under Yannick Ferrera at Al Fateh. This role exposed him to a different football environment and broadened his technical perspective.
He later returned to Morocco where the Royal Moroccan Football Federation appointed him in March 2022 as head coach of the national under 20 team. The appointment marked a strategic step because Moroccan football authorities wanted to strengthen youth development and prepare a new generation of international players.
His first months with the team did not produce immediate results. Morocco failed to qualify for the final of 2023 Africa U20 Cup of Nations, which led to criticism and doubts about the project. However, the federation maintained confidence in his work and allowed him to continue developing the squad.
The World Cup Victory That Changed the Narrative
Maintaining stability proved decisive. Over time Ouahbi refined the team’s tactical organization and built a balanced squad capable of competing at the highest level. When the U20 World Cup arrived in Chile, Morocco entered the tournament with a disciplined and cohesive group.
Match after match, the team demonstrated strong defensive structure, rapid transitions, and efficient finishing. These qualities allowed Morocco to overcome several traditional football powers on its way to the final.
The 2–0 victory against Argentina ultimately confirmed the success of Ouahbi’s approach. The result not only delivered a historic title but also elevated Morocco’s reputation within global youth football.
A New Challenge with Morocco’s Senior National Team
Following this historic achievement, Moroccan football authorities appointed Mohamed Ouahbi as head coach of the senior national team. This new role places him at the center of Morocco’s football strategy for upcoming international competitions.
At this stage, Ouahbi faces the challenge of transferring his developmental philosophy to the senior squad. His analytical coaching style, combined with his experience in player development, provides a foundation for building a competitive national team capable of sustaining Morocco’s recent international progress.
His appointment also reflects a broader commitment to continuity within Moroccan football. By promoting a coach who understands youth development and national identity, the federation aims to create a long term structure that connects emerging talents with the senior national team.
As Morocco prepares for future continental and global competitions, Mohamed Ouahbi now carries the responsibility of transforming his youth success into sustained performance at the highest level of international football.
