Just days before the kickoff of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, national team head coach Walid Regragui has delivered reassuring news regarding Achraf Hakimi, easing concerns among Moroccan fans.
Speaking to Brut Afrique, the Lions of the Atlas coach expressed strong confidence about the availability of the Paris Saint-Germain right-back, who has been sidelined since early November due to an ankle sprain.
“Achraf will play at the AFCON, that’s certain. We are very positive about his participation. The question is when and which match exactly, but he will play the AFCON with us for sure. We have a clear picture, but we’ll keep it to ourselves,” Regragui stated.
Hakimi on Track Despite Recent Injury
Although Hakimi missed nearly 50 days of competition, his recovery appears to be progressing well. The Moroccan star was still wearing a protective boot when he received his African Player of the Year award on November 19, highlighting the caution taken during his rehabilitation.
While his presence in the opening match against Comoros remains uncertain, Regragui emphasized Hakimi’s importance for the remainder of the tournament, particularly as Morocco aims for a deep run on home soil.
Regragui Embraces the Pressure of a Home AFCON
Aware of the massive expectations surrounding the national team, Regragui made it clear that he welcomes the pressure of hosting the tournament.
“I always take it on the positive side,” he explained, expressing his belief that Morocco is about to experience “the most beautiful AFCON in history.”
Driven by what he described as “the best supporters in the world,” the Lions of the Atlas will attempt to reclaim continental glory for the first time since their historic triumph in 1976.
