Was Senegal Protected in the AFCON 2025 Final? Scandal Erupts

New revelations suggest referees were instructed not to sanction Senegalese players during the AFCON 2025 final against Morocco, sparking major controversy.

New revelations have cast a shadow over the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 final between Morocco and the Senegal national football team, reopening debate about refereeing decisions that influenced a decisive moment of the match.

During a recent meeting of the Executive Committee of the Confederation of African Football, the head of the referees committee acknowledged that instructions had been given to the officiating team during the final. According to those statements, Senegalese players who temporarily left the pitch in protest after a VAR-awarded penalty to Morocco were not cautioned, despite regulations that normally require immediate disciplinary action.

A Turning Point Late in the Match

The controversy centers on added time, when Morocco was awarded a penalty following a Video Assistant Referee consultation. The decision triggered visible tension, with Senegalese players reacting strongly and briefly withdrawing from the field.

Under standard football laws, players who leave the pitch without authorization are subject to yellow cards upon their return. However, referees were reportedly instructed not to apply sanctions in order to avoid escalating the situation and risking an early termination of the final.

The match eventually continued and ended with Senegal securing a 1–0 victory after extra time.

Questions Over Fairness and Consistency

From the Moroccan perspective, the admission raises concerns about equal application of the rules in a match of such magnitude. In a final of continental importance, disciplinary consistency is essential to protect sporting integrity.

The episode is likely to intensify calls for greater transparency and independence in refereeing management within CAF, especially as Morocco continues to position itself as a major football nation on both continental and global stages.
