The Moroccan national tennis team showed resilience and growing maturity during the Davis Cup World Group I playoffs, held on February 7–8 in Casablanca, despite a 3–1 loss to a stronger and more experienced Colombian side.
Facing opponents with higher international rankings, Morocco demonstrated competitive spirit and individual quality, confirming the progress of its young generation on the international stage.
Strong Start Led by Reda Bennani
Morocco began the tie on a positive note thanks to Reda Bennani, who delivered an impressive performance in the opening singles match. Ranked 556th worldwide, Bennani defeated Colombia’s Adrià Soriano Barrera (ATP No. 390) in straight sets, 7–6, 7–5, giving Morocco an early advantage.
The second singles match, however, saw Taha Baaddi fall to Nicolás Mejía (ATP No. 169) in two sets, allowing Colombia to level the tie and reassert its ranking superiority.
Experience Makes the Difference
On day two, the doubles match proved decisive. The Moroccan duo of Karim Bennani and Younes Lalami Laaroussi pushed their Colombian counterparts to the limit but ultimately lost both sets on tie-breaks, underlining Colombia’s greater experience in doubles competition.
The tie concluded with another hard-fought singles match, as Reda Bennani battled for over two and a half hours against Nicolás Mejía before narrowly losing 6–1, 2–6, 6–4.
Despite the result, the Moroccan team, guided by captain Hicham Arazi, earned praise for its determination, fighting spirit, and the encouraging development of its young players against a high-level opponent.
