AFCON 2027 Under Review as Kenya Raises Postponement Proposal

Just days after reaffirming its confidence in East Africa’s hosting capacity, the calendar for AFCON 2027 is now under discussion.

On February 13, Patrice Motsepe, president of the Confederation of African Football, confirmed that Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda would officially stage the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, expressing strong belief in a successful edition.

However, recent statements from Kenya have introduced a new possibility: postponement.

Kenya Raises Security Concerns Linked to 2027 Elections

Nicholas Musonye, head of Kenya’s local organizing committee, suggested that shifting the tournament to 2028 could ensure optimal security conditions. The proposal is tied to Kenya’s general elections scheduled for August 2027.

According to organizers, potential political tension during the electoral period could complicate logistics and security planning for a continental event of this scale. The concern extends beyond Kenya, as Tanzania and Uganda are co-host nations, making coordination essential across borders.

The argument centers on safeguarding the tournament’s stability and reputation, rather than questioning the hosting rights themselves.

CAF Maintains Commitment While Stadium Inspections Continue

Despite the proposal, CAF has reiterated its commitment to staging AFCON in 2027. Technical inspections of stadiums and infrastructure are currently underway across the three host countries.

Logistical readiness, infrastructure delivery timelines, and overall regional coordination are under evaluation. The final decision will be made during an upcoming CAF Executive Committee meeting.

For African football, the outcome carries strategic importance. Whether held in 2027 or shifted to 2028, AFCON remains a milestone for East Africa and a key pillar in the continent’s competitive calendar.
