AFCON 2025 in Morocco: Results Of the 3rd Day

The 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025) is taking place in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026. Bringing together 24 national teams, the tournament is being staged across six host cities—Casablanca, Tangier, Marrakech, Rabat, Agadir, and Fez—using nine stadiums.

During the group stage, the 24 teams are divided into six groups of four. The top two teams from each group, along with the four best third-placed teams, will qualify for the round of 16. The knockout phase begins on January 3 and culminates with the final on January 18.

AFCON 2025: Latest Group Stage Results

Group D – DR Congo 1–0 Benin

DR Congo secured a solid start to their AFCON 2025 campaign with a narrow 1–0 victory over Benin on Tuesday in Rabat. Ahead of a highly anticipated clash against Senegal, the Leopards did just enough to claim all three points.

After a strong opening spell, DR Congo broke the deadlock in the 16th minute through Theo Bongonda. The Spartak Moscow forward capitalized on a defensive error following a long pass from Arthur Masuaku, finishing confidently with a left-footed strike.

Group D – Senegal 3–0 Botswana

One of the tournament favorites, Senegal, made a commanding entrance by defeating Botswana 3–0 on Tuesday in Tangier. The Lions of Teranga dominated proceedings from start to finish, confirming their status as serious title contenders.

Nicolas Jackson starred with a brace, opening the scoring shortly before halftime and adding a second goal after the break. Senegal’s control and attacking fluidity left Botswana with little room to respond.

Group C – Nigeria 2–1 Tanzania

Nigeria were forced to work hard for a 2–1 win against Tanzania in Fez. Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, the Super Eagles struggled to extend their lead against a resilient Tanzanian side.

Semi Ajayi opened the scoring with a headed goal in the 36th minute. Tanzania equalized early in the second half through Charles M’Mombwa, before Ademola Lookman restored Nigeria’s advantage just two minutes later. The Nigerians held on despite late pressure.

Group C – Tunisia 3–1 Uganda

Tunisia enjoyed a convincing start to AFCON 2025 with a 3–1 victory over Uganda in Rabat, ending a twelve-year wait for an opening-match win at the tournament.

Ellyes Skhiri put the Carthage Eagles ahead early from a corner, and Elias Achouri doubled the lead before halftime. Achouri completed his brace in the second half, while Uganda managed a late consolation goal through Denis Omedi.

AFCON 2025 Format and Key Dates

The group stage runs until the end of December, followed by the knockout rounds starting on January 3. With qualification margins often decided by goal difference, every match carries significant weight as teams compete for a place in the last 16.

The final of AFCON 2025 will be played on January 18, 2026, concluding a month-long celebration of African football hosted across Morocco.
